ANNUAL FLOWER TRIAL GARDEN
Colorado State University's trial grounds
were established to evaluate the performance of annual flower cultivars
under our unique environmental conditions. The trial garden consists
of 1,117 varieties of annual bedding plants. Twenty flower and plant companies are participating in this year's trials
at Colorado State University. University and industry associates evaluate
the performance of these cultivars on the basis of plant vigor, uniformity,
floriferousness and tolerance to environmental and biotic stresses.
The annual trial garden is under the supervision
of Dr. James E. Klett and David Staats. John Ray was helpful in cultural information, disease and insect control.
The greenhouse growing, planting and maintenance of the trials is
coordinated by Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture
student Matt Brescher. Undergraduate students Justin Trang, Leah Jacobson, David Burleigh, Dayna Lewis, Scott Brunmeier, Robert Ebel and Jeff Bourquin have been assisting and maintaining the garden development this
season. The Master Gardeners of Larimer County have also assisted
with potting plugs, outside transplanting and other garden duties.
The Department of Horticulture and Landscape
Architecture especially wants to recognize and thank Welby Gardens
for growing at cost all seed-propagated varieties for the 2007 trials
and Sun Gro and Welby Gardens for donating the potting media for greenhouse
and outdoor pot trials. Welby Gardens also donated the slow release
fertilizer used in the containers. We also wish to thank the participating
plant and seed companies and Colorado Floriculture Foundation for
their financial assistance; and Green Care Fertilizers Inc.along with
Blackmore Companty for their donation of soluble fertilizer for this
2007 season.
